"All Quiet on the Pier" All- Purpose Binder

A new binder today. Yesterday was an important family birthday back in England. That's something that always makes me feel homesick for a while so today I worked with an image of home - Brighton Pier. When I do go home - not often enough - I stay in a hotel right on the seafront and the pier is always a source of interest and inspiration as well as great fish and chips ! Going to have to seek out some airline deals !

I took the photo that is the basis for this image very early in the morning, long before the crowds arrived, and all was still and quiet except for the sound of the waves and the seagulls.

A Sad Day

Yellow Rose - Canvas Print from Zazzle.com

Today is a sad day hence the yellow rose to cheer me up. Since we moved here over three years ago, we had a groundhog who we named Goobers living in the wild part of the garden. He ate our plants but we forgave him anyway because he was entertaining to have around. This morning we heard a lot of barking outside and the dog had found Goobers much nearer to the house than normal and - long story short - no more Goobers ! He was particularly fond of gourd and pumpkin plants especially for supper ! R.I.P Goobers - we'll miss you !

Peace in the Valley

Peace in the Valley Postcard from Zazzle.com

This picture of a very peaceful farmhouse in the Shenandoah Valley, Virginia, USA was one of the first photos I took when I visited the area way back in 2005. It was the month of March but the temperature was a very spring-like 70F or so and we were able to relax on the porch and drink in the surroundings. The mountain in the background is part of the Massanutten Mountains. I have a view of the other side of the same mountain from my window.

Vintage Fashion

"Charming" All-Purpose Avery Binder from Zazzle.com

I love vintage fashion and I love to produce images which remind us of those days when fashion was elegant, graceful and feminine. Don't get me wrong, I spend most of my time in jeans and t-shirt because it's comfortable and convenient but I do like to dress up now and again in something a little fancier even though I'll then spend time worrying about the lumps and bumps that casual clothes can disguise so well but dresses don't ! But I am what I am and basically I enjoy the process. The binder pictured here is one of my designs featured here and there will be more to come.

Writing about art college experiences earlier today reminded me of this image, the original of which was done more years ago than I care to remember !

Spring Red

Since I was a schoolgirl, I always loved to draw and paint and my aim as a teenager was to go to art school. I didn't make it there until well into my adulthood because going to university and doing academic things was a better prospect economically. There came a time however when I was able to attend art college and when I went there for the first time, full of nervousness and not knowing what to expect, I felt like I'd come home. I even loved the smell of the place - paints, dyes, kilns, glues - all just wonderful.

I remember my first class - a very strict and traditional drawing class - but I recall the second class in that series much more clearly. We had been set homework and the tutor sat us all round in a circle and told us to put our drawings on the floor for everyone to see ! My first taste of open critique ! It was very scary but actually I found it harder to critique other people's work than to take crits on my own. I soon got used to the whole process but some members of the class actually left because they were just too nervous ! My course was centred around modern embroidery and fabric manipulation but contained drawing, painting, colour study and many other aspects of art. It lasted four years and I loved every minute of it.

This design is based on an acrylic painting I did way back in college "Spring Red", a part of botanical drawing class which was a tough class but still enjoyable.

Carousel Fun and Art

Ever since I was a small child, I have been fascinated by carousel horses with their flamboyant designs and bright colours. In my hometown of Brighton in the UK, I started taking photos of the carousels on the seafront and adapting them into art pieces where the horses were released from their round and around daily humdrum and sent on flights of fantasy into strange worlds often full of moons and stars and pleasant pasture where they could be at peace for a while.

Fred's Fantasy Flight was the very first image in the series and has always been one of my most popular images. I sometimes use him as an avatar. The model for Fred came from a horse on the old Palace Pier in Brighton, now renamed  Brighton Pier since the demise of the West Pier. The last time I visited, I couldn't find Fred which was sad but he lives on in my memory at least.

Today is one of the hottest days of the year so far here in Virginia ( currently 101F !!) and so it's a good day to stay safely in the air-conditioning and do something I've been meaning to do for a very long time - namely, start a blog !

I spent much of last winter -coincidentally one of the coldest and snowiest ever - creating and designing my Zazzle Store Susan Epps Oliver and am looking forward to showing you some of my designs and, in the fullness of time, to show you also some of the great designs made by my friends at Zazzle - it really is a powerhouse of talent !

I'm also a person full of random thoughts and, living as I do in a remote mountain top home, there is plenty of nature and wildlife to watch and photograph.

So here goes with one of my designs which was lucky enough to earn a "Today's Best Award " at Zazzle way back in April Pink Retro Mousepad
